Two unusual minerals from an ancient geological site in Siberia were studied at the ALS. The findings extend our understanding of naturally occurring mineral species and varieties and provide useful insights into the environments leading to the formation of potentially valuable mineral ores. https://als.lbl.gov/newly-discovered-minerals-reveal-anomalous-origins/
Eleanor Blakely Awarded the Gray Medal

Santiago Helps Guide Quantum Testbed to the Next Level
Since joining Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Quantum Testbed (AQT) in March 2019, David Santiago has been like an air traffic controller, steadily guiding each activity associated with the testbed through takeoffs, landings – and the occasional turbulence. https://cs.lbl.gov/news-media/news/2019/david-santiago-helps-guide-berkeley-labs-advanced-quantum-testbed-to-the-next-level/
Lab Researchers Awarded Bakar Fellowships
Markita Landry (Biosciences), Alessandra Lanzara (Energy Sciences), Niren Murthy (Biosciences), and Kenichi Soga (EESA) were named UC Berkeley Bakar Fellows, an honor that gives the fellows the money and time to translate their laboratory breakthroughs into technologies ready for the marketplace. https://news.berkeley.edu/2019/09/05/seven-new-bakar-fellows-already-are-making-an-impact/
Lab’s Kam-Biu Luk Wins Future Science Prize
Kam-Biu Luk of the Physics Division is one of four researchers to win the 2019 Future Science Prize. He and Wang Yifang were honored for their discovery of a new type of neutrino oscillation, which is key to understanding the matter-anti-matter asymmetry in the universe. http://www.xinhuanet.com/english/2019-09/09/c_138378114.htm

Pill to Treat Radiation Poisoning Could Aid MRI Patients
Scientists at Berkeley Lab are studying how an anti-radiation-poisoning pill could also help to protect people from the potential toxicity of gadolinium, a critical ingredient in widely used contrast dyes for MRI scans. https://newscenter.lbl.gov/2019/09/12/how-an-anti-nuclear-contamination-pill-could-also-help-mri-patients/
Submissions Open for DOE Tech Transition Proposals
DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions has issued its solicitation for FY20 Technology Commercialization Fund proposals. Declarations are due Oct 10. Email shanshanli@lbl.gov if interested in submitting. An informational meeting will be held Monday, Sept. 16, at noon in Bldg. 50A-5132. https://ipo.lbl.gov/TCF_2020
Latest Water Harvester Pulls More H2O Out of Desert Air
During field tests over three days in California’s Mojave Desert, an updated version of a water harvester developed by the Lab’s Omar Yaghi produced 0.7 liters per kilogram of absorber per day — nearly three cups of clean, pure H2O. That’s 10 times better than the previous version of the harvester. https://news.berkeley.edu/2019/08/27/water-harvester-makes-it-easy-to-quench-your-thirst-in-the-desert/?utm_source=Berkeleyan&utm_campaign=82418957cb-berkeleyan&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_99ee3800d7-82418957cb-388726225
Lab Receives DOE Funding for Quantum Computing
Berkeley Lab is among 30 recipients of $60.7 million in funding from DOE to advance the development of quantum computing and networking, from algorithms, programming languages, compilers, and debugging approaches to wide-area quantum networks that leverage existing fiber optic connections. https://cs.lbl.gov/news-media/news/2019/berkeley-lab-part-of-two-five-year-multi-million-dollar-quantum-computing-projects/
