The DESI team has been using NERSC to model the shapes and colors of more than 1.6 billion individual galaxies detected in 4.3 million images. NERSC resources calibrate the raw data coming off the Mayall telescope to aid DESI in their goal to produce the largest 3D map of the universe ever created. https://www.nersc.gov/news-publications/nersc-news/science-news/2020/supercomputing-pipeline-aids-desis-quest-to-create-3d-map-of-the-universe/
On-Off Switch for Regulating Tumor-Cell Growth Found
Mechanisms for regulating cell growth in certain tumor cells were revealed by a Genentech study of enzyme structures, conducted in part at the ALS. The work establishes a framework for the rational discovery of new therapeutics to improve upon currently existing treatments for certain cancers. https://als.lbl.gov/on-off-switch-for-regulating-tumor-cell-growth/
ESnet to Support New DOE Quantum Internet Blueprint
On Thursday, DOE unveiled a report that lays out a blueprint to accelerate research in quantum science, emphasizing the creation of a quantum internet, a network that can connect distributed quantum computers. In this Q&A, ESnet Director Inder Monga (right) discusses his group’s role in this effort. http://es.net/news-and-publications/esnet-news/2020/new-doe-blueprint-to-pave-the-way-for-a-nationwide-quantum-internet/
July 24: ALS Innovation Forum Series Kicks Off
The Advanced Light is hosting a series of Innovation Forums to enhance collaborations between the ALS and partner divisions across the Lab. The forums will take place over the coming weeks and cover a wide range of topics and instrumentation. The first one on bioimaging is on July 24. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/als-innovation-forums-2020

Upgraded X-Ray Laser Facility Produces First Light
Last Friday, the hard X-ray system for LCLS-II achieved “first light,” demonstrating its performance in readiness for the experimental campaigns ahead. Berkeley Lab oversaw the construction and delivery of the powerful magnetic components, called undulator segments, for the hard X-ray system. https://newscenter.lbl.gov/2020/07/17/slacs-upgraded-x-ray-laser-facility-produces-first-light/
Watch JGI Webinar on Functional Genomics Proposal
Watch the “JGI Engagement: Accessing Functional Genomics Capabilities” webinar and hear how scientists have advanced their research through the Joint Genome Institute’s year-round CSP Functional Genomics proposal call. Proposals submitted by July 30 will be included in the next review. https://jgi.doe.gov/webinar-csp-functional-genomics-call/
Battery Breakthrough Boosts Electric Flight, Cars
Researchers at Berkeley Lab, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University, have developed a new battery material that could enable long-range electric vehicles that can drive for hundreds of miles on a single charge, and eVTOL (electric vertical takeoff and landing) aircraft. https://newscenter.lbl.gov/2020/07/20/battery-electric-planes-cars/
Secret Off-And-On Again Relationship for Solar Fuels
They say it’s better to have had something special and lost it than to have never had it at all, and that applies to metal oxide catalysts, say scientists. Copper that was once bound with oxygen is better at converting carbon dioxide into renewable fuels than copper that was never bound to oxygen. https://newscenter.lbl.gov/2020/07/17/solar-fuels-copper-oxgyen/
NAWI to Issue RFP in August
The National Alliance for Water Innovation (NAWI) — which seeks to lower the cost and energy of desalination — intends to issue a Request for Proposals (RFP) entitled “Innovations in Intensified Brine Management.” Lab researchers are invited to share with their networks.
