Carbon Fuels Get Greener for Renewable Energy
A discovery by researchers at Berkeley Lab and the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis shows that recycling carbon dioxide into valuable chemicals and fuels can be economical and efficient – all through a single copper catalyst.
Safety Tips for Navigating in Less Daylight
More of the afternoon commute is in the dusk and dark in winter. According to safety experts, this makes it harder for drivers to see due to compromised depth perception, color recognition, and peripheral vision. It is also harder to see our wildlife that may be foraging in the late afternoon. https://today.lbl.gov/2018/12/17/safety-tips-for-navigating-in-less-daylight/
Massive New Dark Matter Detector Gets Its ‘Eyes’
The LUX-ZEPLIN dark matter detector, which will soon begin its deep-underground search for particles thought to account for most matter in the universe, now has “eyes.” The post Massive New Dark Matter Detector Gets Its ‘Eyes’ appeared first on News Center.
Annual Sustainability Report & Plan

NERSC-9 Facility Upgrade Begins
Construction activities will begin in mid-December along Cyclotron Road near Building 59. Temporary fencing installation along the Cyclotron Road sidewalk won’t impede pedestrian access. This supports the deployment of the Perlmutter (NERSC-9) HPC system.
Freeze-frame Microscopy Captures Molecule’s ‘Lock-and-Load’ on DNA
Researchers captured freeze-frames of the changing shape of the huge macromolecular complex, transcription factor IID, as it locks onto DNA and loads the machinery for reading the genetic code.
