Today is the United Nation’s International Women & Girls in Science Day. Bring Your Kid to Work Day is on April 17 this year, with registration starting on March 16. Participants and volunteers receive T-shirts as part of the event, and this year Lab employees are invited to submit designs for the T-shirt. Deadline is Feb. 14. In 2018, JGI embarked on a pilot project with biology students from Boca Raton Community High School in Florida to apply the latest molecular techniques to learn more about the microbial communities in the Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Berkeley Lab recently hosted 90 young women from Pinole Valley and Richmond High School Engineering Academies to learn about careers in STEM. The day included a networking luncheon with more than 40 female scientists and engineers, tours of lab facilities, and career mapping. https://k12education.lbl.gov/news
The Lab is hosting its annual Nuclear Science Day for Scouts on March 21. The event brings local Boy and Girl Scout troops onsite for tours and demos. To conclude the end of 2019’s International Year of the Periodic Table, Berkeley Lab hosted a contest for local high school students in which they described their favorite element using words, images, or video. Tammy Campbell of the IT Division is committed to education advocacy and has supported numerous mentoring programs at the Lab and in the local community.
