Safety has been an essential part of the Lab’s history from the beginning. In the early days of science, safety procedures used today were unknown, but as time went on, the Lab established EHS to protect everyone at the Lab so each could go home safely at the end of their shift. https://berkeleylab.exposure.co/celebrate-the-past-environment-health-safety?source=share-berkeleylab
Safety Reminder for Those Returning to Lab Work
A researcher who had been away from lab work for several weeks discovered even hand muscles need to stay in shape. Read these key learnings from one researcher’s experience so you can return to work safely. https://ehs.lbl.gov/2020/12/16/safety-reminder-for-those-return-to-lab-work/
Three Questions For Evelyn Davies
Evelyn Davies with Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) is no stranger to Berkeley Lab, having joined the Lab in 2010 to perform postdoctoral research at the Molecular Foundry. Now she leads the Chemical Lifecycle Management Corrective Action Plan, supporting Lab-wide research and safety. https://we-are-berkeley-lab.lbl.gov/supporting-science/evelyn-davies
Watch: VP Harris Receives COVID-19 Vaccine; Shares Her Science Affinity
As VP Kamala Harris received her final COVID-19 vaccine dose live on CNN and C-SPAN Tuesday, NIH Director Dr. Francis Collins remarked how Harris’ mother was a scientist who once worked at the Lab (at 1:17). Harris shared her appreciation of science, adding her first job was washing pipettes. https://www.c-span.org/video/?508343-1/vice-president-harris-receives-covid-19-shot
Dangerous Driving Threatens Your Safety at the Lab
An increase in dangerous driving on Lab property — including tailgating, passing other cars, and rolling through stop signs — is putting human and animal life in danger. Please drive safely on Lab sites, and report unsafe driving to 510-486-6999. https://site-security.lbl.gov/2021/01/23/driving-dangerously-unsafe-maneuvers-threaten-your-safety-at-the-lab/
Jan. 25 Workshop on Creating Wellness Habits
Habits matter because they govern much of what we do every day. UC Berkeley’s “Be Well at Work” program is offering a workshop on Monday, Jan. 25, that will explore how habits are formed and provide tips on changing unhealthy routines. The event begins at noon. https://diversity.lbl.gov/2021/01/11/be-well-at-work-habits-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly-january-25-2021/
Oh Deer! Remember to Wear Your Mask
If these deer were following current safety protocols, they would both be masked, and they would probably back up a couple of feet. Even outside, it’s important to wear masks and maintain six feet of distance while hanging with coworkers. Stay apart. It’s safer. https://covid.lbl.gov/
Give Each Other Space
Checklist for a safe socially distant meeting: Mask – check. Well-ventilated space – check. Six feet apart – definitely check. When calculating social distance, it’s best to err on the side of farther away. Stay apart. It’s safer. https://covid.lbl.gov/
Chemical Reduction Project Restricts Access to Some Lab Areas This Weekend
As part of the recent Chemical Reduction Project that identified chemicals that are no longer needed, the Lab will be working with a specialized vendor to treat the identified chemicals on site this weekend. Several parking lots will be closed, and entry to some buildings may be limited at times. https://ehs.lbl.gov/2021/01/14/chemical-reduction-project-restricts-access-to-some-lab-areas-this-weekend/
Personnel Accountability Drill on Jan. 21
On Thursday, Jan. 21, all Lab employees, affiliates, and contractors will receive a notification from the emergency LabAlert system. The message will request a response that includes your status and availability. You only need to respond once, but it is critical that you do so, even if teleworking. https://site-security.lbl.gov/2021/01/05/personnel-accountability-drill-january-21/
