The Lab has a resident (cardboard) goat that is making itself available for selfies. The trick: you have to find it. Find and take a photo with Selfie Goat between now and Founder’s Day (August 26), and you could win 1500 Bucketlist points to name a (real) goat. There’s even a virtual selfie option. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/lbnl-goats/home#h.uxms1ujnnwv7
Bucketlist Redemption: Meet Sarah McGoat
Sarah McGinn, Division Safety Coordinator for Computing Sciences and IT, has given the most recognitions since Bucketlist launched – 1,595 points in 129 recognitions. For her commitment to the Lab’s culture of appreciation, a goat has been named ‘Sarah McGoat’ in her honor. Thank someone today. http://bucketlist.lbl.gov/
Baa-Bye: Goats Have Left
The goat herd has left the Lab a bit earlier than expected this year. This was due to a larger herd, less vegetation due to dry conditions, and younger goats who really like to eat. The goat map is being retired for 2022, but it, and the goats, will be back next year. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/lbnl-goats/home
Spot the Goat Herd
The 600-strong goat herd from “Goats R Us” is currently munching its way across the hilly terrain of the Lab as part of the Lab’s fire mitigation plan. Use our handy — and mostly accurate — map to help spot them. But please observe from a distance. These are working animals and not pets. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/lbnl-goats/home
It’s Fledgling Friday: Meet Grinnell Jr. and Lindsay
The peregrine falcon chicks (of Campanile parents Annie and Alden) have officially been named: Grinnell Jr. for their fallen father and Lindsay for the Wildlife Center where Grinnell was treated. Hopes are now high for Fledge Watch, the chicks’ anticipated flight training to begin June 14. https://calfalcons.berkeley.edu/
Webcam Alert: Cal Falcon Fledglings Captivate Viewers
Annie the peregrine falcon, and her new mate Alden, have captured the hearts of many who watch them raise two fledgling falcon eyas, or chicks, from a livestream camera mounted on the UCB campanile. Click on the link to watch the family interactions. https://youtu.be/7nvCVS2TRRk
The Goats Are Coming!
Every year, as part of the Lab’s fire management program, a 300-strong goat herd from Goats R Us feasts on the grassy slopes of the Lab. The herd is due to arrive the week of May 31. Updates on herd arrival and movement will be shared in Elements. (Video taken in 2020.) https://youtu.be/kt5DGwXwN-Y
Vote Now to Name the New Campanile Falcon
Cast your vote and help name the new falcon who has joined the UC Berkeley Campanile family. While all the finalist names are great, one pays tribute to Melvin Calvin (1911-1997), a Berkeley professor and leading scientist at the Lab who won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1961. #VoteCalvin https://t.co/nnafBrvHR5
Video Replay: A Catastrophe Avoided
Last fall, one smoker chose to put the Lab and community at risk by putting out cigarettes in a wood post on a red flag day. Damage to the Lab could have been catastrophic. The result could have been fatal. October is Fire Prevention Month. Let’s work together to prevent a tragedy at the Lab. https://youtu.be/5okFQfUT-U4
Bucketlist Redemption: Meet Tom Goatant and Goatbrand
Tom Gallant and Gerbrand Ceder earned points on Bucketlist by bringing the Lab’s core values to life, then they redeemed their points to name a goat. Tom and Gerbrand recently met ‘Tom Goatant’ and ‘Goatbrand.’ You can thank and recognize someone who lives out the Lab’s value today on Bucketlist. http://bucketlist.lbl.gov/
