Heat Advisory Continues Today
With extreme heat continuing today, staff are reminded to take precautions and stay safe. These include drink plenty of water, limiting strenuous outdoor activities, seeking air conditioned buildings, and wear light-colored clothing. https://www.ready.gov/heat
Red Flag Warning Today
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for the East Bay Hills, which means there is an elevated potential for rapid fire spread and increased risk of heat-related illnesses. Lab Is on Public Safety Power Shutdown Watch
PG&E notified its customers that there is a reasonable chance of a public service power shutdown in some areas of the North and East Bay in the next 72 hours due to windy and dry conditions. Although this won’t necessarily affect the Lab, watch for updates as the situation changes at status.lbl.gov. http://status.lbl.gov/
Knowing Locations of AEDs & Bleed Kits Can Save Lives
The Lab has AEDs, or automated external defibrillators, placed in strategic locations and marked with signs. There are also Stop the Bleed kits, which can help in a traumatic bleeding situation. Becoming familiar with the locations of these tools can save lives. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/emergencies/medical-preparation
How to Make Emergency Calls From the Lab
For a life-threatening emergency dial 911 from any phone — desk or mobile. For non-life threatening emergencies, dial x6999 from a Lab phone or 510-486-6999 offsite. Those calls go to the Security Operations Center for dispatch. Stay on the line if possible to provide more information. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/emergencies/emergency-management/emergency-notifications
Video: Take Action Before There is Another Smoke Event
The time to plan for wildfire smoke is before it happens, and protecting your health is a big part of preparing. Talk with your doctor now if you have, or think you might have, health conditions that could be made worse by smoke. https://youtu.be/fgrV-eA8EpY
Video: Why You Need to Pack a Go-Bag
After an earthquake, when you’ve safely reached one of the Lab’s assembly areas, the focus will be on getting home. You need to be prepared to head home, possibly on foot, and a personalized go-bag will make that trek easier. Watch this video to learn more about what goes into a go-bag. https://youtu.be/suoCRwipHhw
Lab Preps for Possible PG&E Power Shut-Offs
PG&E is planning to shut off power when a red flag warning co-exists with other conditions. If that power line feeds the Bay Area power grid, power could be lost at the Lab and at your home. The Lab is making plans for this possibility and you should prepare at home. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/emergencies/planned-power-shutdown
Stewardship in Action: Safety Walkarounds
Lab Director Mike Witherell and Deputy Lab Director for Operations Michael Brandt reviewed a chemical storage locker recently during a safety walkaround with Mike Decool, part of a renewed focus on line management stewardship and safe operations.
