Two Berkeley Lab technologies — high throughput cell-free microreactor for optimization of biochemical pathways and localization of hot spots in solids using acoustic waves for energy generation and other applications — earned FY19 DOE Technology Commercialization Fund awards. https://ipo.lbl.gov/TCF_2020
Lab Technologies Showcased at National Lab Day
Attendees at National Lab Day in Washington D.C. stopped by the Lab’s booth to learn more about Berkeley Lab’s Interruption Cost Estimate Calculator. The event showcases national lab research for members of congress and industry. The Lab’s Model Predictive Control technology was also featured.
Lab Participates in National Lab Day in D.C. Today
National Lab Day — an event in D.C. connecting members of congress with national lab research — focuses on grid modernization. Berkeley Lab is hosting two exhibits: the Interruption Cost Estimate (ICE) Calculator and Model Predictive Control. Director Witherell is attending.
By Aug. 1, Training Required for International Visitor Hosts
Hosts of international visitors under the Foreign Visitors and Assignees program must take a revised version of the host training course that reflects revised Department of Energy policies and requirements. The course takes about 30 minutes and must be completed by August 1. https://training.lbl.gov/ehs/training/webcourses/SEC0505/
Lab to Host AI for Science Town Hall
On Sept. 11 and 12, the Lab will host one of four DOE “AI for Science” town hall meetings. The goal is to gather input on the opportunities and challenges facing the scientific community as the areas of high-performance computing and artificial intelligence technologies converge. https://web.cvent.com/event/b03cf98d-d350-4f66-805a-1a19f03bdcf8/summary
DOE Launches Tech Transfer Poster Series
DOE’s Office of Technology Transitions celebrates the success stories of the national labs through an “Advancing America through Technology Transfer” poster series. Berkeley Lab’s poster features quantum dot technology now used in super high-definition displays. https://www.energy.gov/technologytransitions/downloads/advancing-america-through-technology-transfer
Video Highlights Biosciences’ I-Corps Adventure
Six Biosciences Area teams participated in the recent I-Corps Short Course. In this video, select participants share how the course gave them a deeper understanding of the ecosystems around their technology, and introduced them to the customer discovery process and business model concepts.
Ptycho Developer Conference Held at Lab
An international workshop was held at the Lab recently on ptychography, an imaging technique that achieves unprecedented resolutions using data and computationally intensive techniques. Participants discussed a range of topics from advanced mathematics and optics to HPC solutions. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/ptycho-developer-2019/
Working With Industry to Save Energy
Industry leaders learned the latest techniques and technologies to save energy and water during a recent event at Berkeley Lab hosted by the Department of Energy’s Better Buildings, Better Plants program.
