Berkeley Lab Highlighted in DOE Space Exploration Blog Post
Paul Dabbar, DOE Under Secretary for Science, had nice things to say about Berkeley Lab in his blog post, “U.S. Department of Exploration.” He cites the groundbreaking work of Luis Alvarez, Saul Perlmutter, and the ongoing work by the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) team. https://www.energy.gov/articles/doe-department-energy-or-department-exploration
Faces of STEM: Zach Marshall
DOE’s STEM Rising program is an initiative to inspire, educate, and spark an interest in STEM careers. The Lab’s Zach Marshall recounts what drew him to STEM, offers advice for others thinking about STEM, and shares what he does in his free time. https://youtu.be/0Gp1SqRpHTs
Faces of STEM: Vi Rapp
DOE’s STEM Rising program seeks to inspire, educate, and spark an interest in STEM careers. To help educate students during the shelter-in-place, national lab researchers were asked to share their love of science. Here, the Lab’s Vi Rapp discusses how she solves problems to improve human health. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98SZN-lPNX8
Faces of STEM: Danielle Goudeau
DOE’s STEM Rising program seeks to inspire, educate, and spark an interest in STEM careers. To help educate students during the shelter-in-place, national lab researchers were asked to share their science. Here is the Lab’s Danielle Goudeau demonstrating single cell genomics. https://youtu.be/Wom5B-VSjPI
Faces of STEM: Maria Zurek
DOE’s STEM Rising program is an initiative to inspire, educate, and spark an interest in STEM careers. As part of the effort to educate students during the shelter-in-place, scientists from the national labs were asked to share their science. Lab to Conduct R&D to Improve the Nation’s COVID-19 Testing Capabilities
The Lab is part of a multi-laboratory working group that received DOE funds to conduct R&D to help improve the nation’s COVID-19 testing capabilities. The research involves eight DOE national labs over the next six months. There are five teams; three of them are headed up by Lab scientists. https://stratcomm-elements.lbl.gov/2020/04/15/berkeley-lab-to-conduct-rd-to-improve-the-nations-covid-19-testing-capabilities/
DESI Review Team Approves Completion of Project Construction
A DOE independent project review team has approved the completion of the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) construction project, led by the Lab. Installed on a telescope in Arizona, DESI is expected to begin mapping galaxies this year which could provide clues to the nature of dark energy. https://www.desi.lbl.gov/
Looking Up From the Mountaintop: Q&A with DESI Lead Observer
The Lab is the lead on DESI, a project that will map the universe in 3D to hunt for dark energy clues. Satya Gontcho A Gontcho, a lead observer for DESI, shares her experiences – including observing stints to run through checklists and probe how components are working. https://newscenter.lbl.gov/2020/03/26/looking-up-from-the-mountaintop-qa-with-a-telescope-instruments-lead-observer
