Berkeley Lab has a new website for visits and tours designed to provide visitors with practical guidelines, forms, and information. Visit requests involving high-level guests from U.S. and foreign government offices, academia, and industry leaders should be directed to the Protocol Office.
As part of the Berkeley Bridge Graduate Summer Fellowships program, first-year grad students from UC Berkeley will conduct research at the Lab starting in June. The American Association for the Advancement of Science is accepting applications for its IF/THEN Ambassadors program. The initiative brings together 100 women from a variety of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers to serve as role models for middle school girls. https://www.aaas.org/page/ifthen-ambassadors
Prescott Elementary is celebrating 150 years of educating students in West Oakland with a day of activities, performances, and lots of family-friendly fun. Brian Anderson, Director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), visited April 2 and 3 and met with Lab Director Mike Witherell and the leadership of ETA, CS, and EESA to discuss collaborative research projects. https://www.netl.doe.gov/
The Office of Science Graduate Student Research program provides supplemental awards for PhD. students to conduct part of their graduate thesis research at a DOE laboratory for three to 12 consecutive months. Applications are due by May 15. https://science.energy.gov/wdts/scgsr/how-to-apply/
Government affairs representatives from industry and national laboratories who make up the Steering Committee for the U.S. Coalition on the Advancement of Supercomputing met recently at the Lab to plan this year’s activities and toured the ALS while here.
UC Davis won the Berkeley Lab regional competition and the University of Central Florida won the national competition.
