Studies done at the ALS showed that, in an iron-based superconductor, a mysterious phase transition is driven by interactions between the material’s 2D layers. The work suggests that interlayer interactions are non-negligible and can tune superconductivity. https://als.lbl.gov/interlayer-coupling-drives-mysterious-phase-transition/
March 9 CUCSA Town Hall
All staff are invited to join the Council of UC Staff Assemblies (CUCSA) for a UC-wide town hall on March 9 at noon to learn about CUCSA’s current work to address some of the issues affecting UC staff. Register to attend today. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/berkeleylabcucsa/home#h.qs0nm54e4squ
NMDC Community Conversation: The True Potential of Citing Data
The National Microbiome Data Collaborative will host a panel discussing the data citation landscape and increasing awareness of best practices of getting and giving credit to data. Join four panelists on Wednesday, March 9 at 11 a.m. to learn more. https://lbnl.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_p_xa_owPSs–Dm-vkJEneA
At-a-Glance: On-Site Meetings
On-site meetings are allowed at the Lab, but follow guidelines such as wearing masks, leaving room between participants, opening windows and doors where possible, and including a hybrid option for those who cannot come on site. Read more about the on-site meeting recommendations. https://drive.google.com/file/d/1PoWdV8YCf8eFJD03huGSLturGttA1mNN/view
Information Session: Writing Molecular Foundry User Proposals
Hear from Foundry scientific and technical staff and the User Program Office about how to write a successful Molecular Foundry user proposal on Friday, March 4, from 1 to 2 p.m. This event is just in time for mapping out your user proposal for the Foundry’s spring standard proposal call. https://foundry.lbl.gov/2022/02/27/information-session-proposals-2022/
Volunteers Needed for Bilingual High School STEM Camp
Volunteers are needed to help facilitate workshops for Science en Acción (SeA), the Lab’s first bilingual high school STEM camp running April 7-9. Facilitators can join remotely and Spanish-English translators will be available. You can sign up for this opportunity through the link. https://lbl.galaxydigital.com/need/detail/?need_id=641973
Curious About What’s New or Changed at the Lab? Check Out this Website
A new website, Return to Lab Sites, provides the most likely needed info for someone who has been physically away from or is new to the Lab. It is a quick reference tool with links providing more details. Additional sections will be added as the Lab transitions to more people working on site. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/returntosites/at-a-glance
LDRD Program Announces FY22 Projects
The Laboratory Directed Research and Development program at Berkeley Lab produces cutting edge research for the DOE and the nation. For the FY22 cycle, 99 LDRD projects are being funded at a total value of $24.1M. Read more about the projects and PIs receiving funding. Improving Atmospheric Water Harvesting
Researchers used crystallography at the ALS to trace water-molecule uptake in a porous compound, then made modifications that improved the material’s efficiency at harvesting water from the air. This is an important step toward alleviating water shortages in the future. https://als.lbl.gov/improving-the-efficiency-of-atmospheric-water-harvesting/
