Join a workshop on Thursday, July 28, for an intro to Open OnDemand (OOD), a new high-performance computing portal. OOD is the easiest way to access Lawrencium and other dedicated research clusters at the Lab through an interactive server and GUI apps like Jupyter Notebook, Matlab, and RStudio. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfPdPFhrorti1aIxdx1M-B5VOmhpfGtWbHKVoV5OA4yorArng/viewform
Copper Doping Improves Sodium-Ion Battery Performance
A big plus for the development of sodium-ion batteries is that sodium is earth-abundant and relatively inexpensive, easing environmental and supply-chain concerns. Using the ALS, researchers were able to understand why sodium-ion battery longevity improves when the cathode is doped with copper. https://als.lbl.gov/copper-doping-improves-sodium-ion-battery-performance/
Exit Side of Grizzly Gate Temporarily Closed for Repairs
The exit side of Grizzly Gate is temporarily closed. Repairs are underway on the exit mechanism and should be completed early next week. Storm Drain Repair Underway
Construction is underway to relocate a storm drain pipe and replace utility maintenance holes on Lawrence Road beneath the Centennial Road bridge. There will be one-lane traffic control at times. The project will continue to the end of August. Consider using other gates for Lab entry and exit. https://pim.lbl.gov/2022/07/19/storm-drain-repair-starting-7-18-22/
Joint Genome Institute Breaks through Bacteria’s Regulon ID Mysteries
With RIViT-seq technology able to identify target genes associated with sigma factors in bacteria, the clues these little eukaryotes hold to advancements in medicine, energy, and beyond become much easier to find. https://jgi.doe.gov/rivit-seq-streamlining-regulon-identification-in-bacteria/
Monthly Zoom Update Required
Every 3rd Thursday of the month, IT requires you to update your Zoom application. Keeping up with the latest updates provides enhanced security, new features, and bug fixes. Find the Roving Selfie Goat
The Lab has a resident (cardboard) goat that is making itself available for selfies. The trick: you have to find it. Find and take a photo with Selfie Goat between now and Founder’s Day (August 26), and you could win 1500 Bucketlist points to name a (real) goat. There’s even a virtual selfie option. https://sites.google.com/lbl.gov/lbnl-goats/home#h.uxms1ujnnwv7
