On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce federal laws enacted two and a half years earlier prohibiting the enslavement of people. This day became known as Juneteenth; now officially a federal holiday celebrated this year on Monday. https://nmaahc.si.edu/juneteenth
